Let’s talk about crating.
To crate or not to crate? That is the question many new pet owners ask and it’s a good one that really depends on the lifestyle of you and your pet. If you plan to spend a lot of time at home you may not think you need to crate your pet. However at some time or another you are going to need to leave the house and when you do how will you contain your pet?
Benefits of crating your dog or puppy:
It teaches them patience and impulse control.
Makes house breaking much more simple.
Crates prevent from destructive chewing which could lead to a very serious injury from choking, poisoning or even blocked intestines.
It can provide a safe way for travel in the car.
Provides a safe & secure haven at bedtime or when needing a break from over stimulation.
Prepare your pet for times they will most likely spend time in a crate such as at the Vet or groomers.
If your dog absolutely hates his/her crate there may be a reason for it. First of all no one wants to be confined to an area for hours on end. A dog should not be stuck in there for more than 6+ hours at a time. If your work requires you to be away for extended periods of time, consider asking a neighbor, friend or pet sitter to pay them a visit to stimulate them and provide fresh water and a bathroom break.
Secondly, the size of your pet’s crate is important. If too large, you may have issues of them eliminating in their space and if too small it can create anxiety and stress. Here’s how to properly determine the size crate you will need.
It should be tall enough for them to sit/stand with a little clearance above their head. Measure from top of head to floor while your pup sits and add 2-4 inches.
Should be just wide enough for them to turn around and lie down.
Deep enough to lie down on stomach with front paws stretched out in front. To determine this measure from head to tail and then add about 4-6 inches.
Never place a crate in direct sunlight or near a heating vent- drafts can be bad for dogs. We will cover what to place in your pets crate in an upcoming article.
